The origins of the idea to establish museum date back to 1993. However, the official decision to create the museum was not made until 2005. Finally, the Museum opened in 2013 with its mission to: “preserve and recall the memory of the history of Polish Jews and to counteract antisemitism, discrimination, and exclusion by fostering mutual understanding and respect”. The building of Museum is an example of contemporary architecture. It was designed by the Finnish architect, Rainer Mahlamäki, whose concept reflects the idea of a “museum of life” that the Institution promotes. Moreover, the building itself refers to the history of Polish Jews, a message also emphasized by its location. The Museum is situated in the heart of the former Jewish district, which was later transformed into the Warsaw Ghetto by the Germans during World War II. Furthermore, next to the Museum, there is The Monument to the Ghetto Heroes, designed by Natan Rapaport, erected in 1948.
