📜 How to complete the „Central Europe Through the Ages” course

Welcome to ReCall – Central Europe Through the Ages, a comprehensive digital course designed to explore the shared cultural memory of Hungary, Czechia, and Poland across centuries.

The course combines video lectures, interactive tasks, maps, and a structured knowledge catalogue into one integrated learning experience. Below you will find a short guide to help you navigate it effectively.

🎬 1. Start with the Video Modules

The course consists of 15 modules, each built around a professionally recorded video lecture (25–45 minutes).

Each module features:

  • University professors, researchers, and expert coordinators (34 individual participants from 8 different institutions)
  • Clear thematic focus within Central European history
  • Comparative regional perspective

Recommended approach:
Watch the full video first without interruption. Then revisit key segments while completing the related tasks.

🧠 2. Complete the E-Learning Task (15–20 minutes)

After every video, you will find an interactive e-learning exercise.

These tasks:

  • Are freely accessible and self-paced
  • Are directly based on the video content
  • Include source analysis, interpretation exercises, and reflective questions
  • Encourage critical thinking, not memorization

They are designed to deepen your understanding and help you actively engage with historical material.

📖 3. Use the ReCall Catalogue (338 Entries)

Each module is connected to the ReCall Project Catalogue, a structured knowledge base containing 338 carefully curated entries.

The catalogue is the backbone of the project and is organized in three levels:

First Level – 4 Thematic Categories:

  • Myths and Legends
  • Political History
  • Social History
  • Cultural History

Second Level – 15 Specific Topics
Each of the 15 course modules fits into one of these thematic frameworks.

Third Level – Key Historical Figures & Context
Facts and events are grouped around major personalities and milestones, providing structured historical context.

The catalogue and maps are meant to be read together — their data structure forms the intellectual foundation of the entire project.

🗺️ 4. Explore the Interactive Maps

All 338 catalogue points are visualized on:

  • One Interactive Master Map
  • Four Thematic Maps (corresponding to the main categories)

📍 Map points cover Hungary, Czechia, and Poland
📚 15 topics across 4 themes
🧩 100+ narratives
🖼️ 300+ curated images

The maps allow you to:

  • Explore connections geographically
  • Discover regional patterns
  • Navigate non-linearly through history

Tip: Use the map while reading the catalogue to understand spatial relationships and cross-border connections.

📝 5. Thematic PDF Tests (for University Use)

For instructors or offline academic use (MOOC-style implementation), the course includes:

  • 4 downloadable thematic PDF tests
  • Answer keys included
  • Fact-based assessment format
  • Designed to measure catalogue reading comprehension

These tests are ideal for:

  • Seminar use
  • Blended learning
  • Traditional evaluation settings

🔄 Suggested Learning Path

  1. Watch the video module
  2. Complete the e-learning task
  3. Read the related catalogue entries
  4. Explore the interactive map
  5. (Optional) Take the thematic test

This layered approach ensures both analytical understanding and factual precision.

🎯 What Makes ReCall Unique?

  • Structured knowledge hierarchy
  • Integrated visual and textual exploration
  • Comparative Central European perspective
  • Combination of narrative learning and academic rigor

ReCall is not only a course — it is a digital cultural memory platform designed to help you understand how myths, political events, social transformations, and cultural symbols shaped Central Europe.

📚 Course – Videomodules

As part of the RECALL project’s next phase, we are developing a microcourse in English that will consist of 15 video lectures, one for each thematic topic. Each video, lasting 30-35 minutes, will be produced by the university responsible for the common description of the corresponding topic, with 5 videos each from Hungary, the Czech Republic, and Poland. The videos will be accompanied by presentations, transcripts, and suggestions for e-learning tests. The Hungarian team will handle the preparation of English subtitles, translations into national languages, and the editing of the videos. Additionally, Hungary will provide the e-learning platform where the videos and exercises will be uploaded.

📅 Course Development Milestones

The course development will proceed in several key phases. By December 15, 2024, the Hungarian team will deliver a Training Development Document outlining the course objectives and structure. Also by December 15, 2024, they will also provide a Training Agenda and technical guidelines. Throughout 2025, the teams from Hungary, the Czech Republic, and Poland will produce raw videos, presentations, and suggestions for e-learning tests, while national student meetings will be held to further refine the course content. The Hungarian team will finalize subtitles, translations, and video editing by Aug 31, 2025.

🚀 Testing and Piloting the Course

The completed e-learning course will be uploaded by August 30, 2025, and tested during the 3rd International Study Meeting in Wrocław, Poland, in September 2025. Following this, a pilot test with 15 participants from each country (Hungary, Czech Republic, and Poland) will be conducted between October and November 2025. This extensive development process will ensure that the course offers a high-quality, engaging educational experience that aligns with the goals of the RECALL project, contributing to the promotion of Central European history and cultural heritage.
